Natural remedies for Autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, and other autism spectrum disorders (ASD) should always be considered.
These disorders are on the increase as seen in this recent article:
Children in the grip of autism
More families faced with a difficult diagnosis, by Molly Masland on MSNBC.com
Decades of research have now made autism the most well-known disorder in a category recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as pervasive developmental disorders. In addition to autism, the category includes Asperger Syndrome, Rett’s Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, a catch-all category for children who clearly have impairments but don’t meet the criteria for any of the other disorders (see box below). In many cases, the differences between the various disorders are often slight and easily confused even by specialists.
Four times more common in males than females, according to the Cure Autism Now Foundation, autism affects people from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. It involves a wide spectrum of symptoms ranging from mild to severe, but all have three areas in common: communication problems, impaired social relationships, and unusual patterns of behavior.
I’ve provided natural and holistic care for children with these brain-function disorders. They all seem to benefit in some way or another, with their parents reporting improvement that the kids get calmer, concentrate better, become more physically coordinated, and sometimes even need less medication.
I’ll never forget one outstanding case—a six-year-old boy who was diagnosed with PDD (Pervasive Development Disorder). His mother brought him in and was so suspicious and skeptical I could have cut the negative vibes with a knife! She eventually consented to allowing me to treat the boy and relaxed when I explained how it worked.
The boy had the typical spinal misalignment/ nerve impulse interuption pattern that we chiropractors see in most of these cases (aka subluxation). Still, I didn’t promise much nor was I very optimistic, mostly because of the mother’s attitude. Lo and behold, after just one chiropractic adjustment, the child was like a different person. I wrote the details of this up in a type of research document called a Case Study and presented it to other doctors at a conference. You can view it in the Appendix of my book Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages. The chapter called Raising Healthier Children contains dozens of other practical tips.
Not all cases respond this dramatically.
The mother, you might wonder? She’s been referring patients ever since.
What can you expect when you take your child to a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC)? Most practitioners prefer to take their own consultation/history and perform an examination. The exam will involve a lot of touching and looking because the focus is on finding and changing and/or correcting body structure. Chiropractors are well trained on when and how to refer to other professionals. Some common questions might be: “How did the birth take place, vaginal delivery or C-section? Were forceps utilized? Was the child breastfed and for how long? Has the child sustained any significant trauma like falls or serious horseplay? How are the child’s eating habits? What previous treatment has the child received? Do you notice any unusual postural habits?”
The care if warranted, will likely consist of a gentle, well-controlled chiropractic adjustment. If children have any fears, these usually quickly disappear when they experience the ease of treatment. If the child receives a hands-on type of treatment, as is commonly done, sometimes a slight popping or cracking sound is heard. On occasion, the child may experience a mild soreness or redness in the area of treatment, especially with the first one. Beyond this, most children are then eager to climb up on the treatment table.
The doctor will likely suggest a treatment plan that may involve a few days or a few weeks, depending on the severity and nature of the problem. Lifestyle or nutritional changes and exercises may also be part of the recovery plan. X-rays may be necessary. Feel welcome to ask openly about any aspect of chiropractic. Some chiropractors specialize in the treatment of children, and may even receive advanced certification, but all DCs receive ample pediatric training as part of their chiropractic curriculum.
If you choose to utilize regular chiropractic treatment as prevention, its greatest benefits are seen when treatment is consistent, perhaps once a month minimally. Why? Because as I explained earlier, structural disturbances (subluxations) occur as a result of trauma, stress, and toxins. What child isn’t constantly exposed to those?
Those noises that often accompany chiropractic adjustments are technically called cavitations. That means there is a slight, harmless pressure change in the joints that are moved. It’s quite similar to the phenomenon involved when a suction cup is pulled from a piece of glass. Beware that critics, adversaries, and uninformed people often use this sound phenomenon to scare and discourage those who utilize chiropractic treatment. They’ll say that the joints are wearing out or becoming arthritic from the repetitive treatment, but these accusations are completely unfounded. If this was even partially true, then the spines of chiropractors and their families would all be worn out, because we practice what we preach.
Children say and do many comical things. When they get chiropractic treatment, they are no less funny. Many times I’ve heard them comment that the noise their spines make when they get adjusted “…sounds like popcorn!” One young girl said “I’m here to get my rice crispies! You know, snap, crackle, and pop!”
Please consider getting your child examined by a Doctor of Chiropractic.
